Getting the shot – Toya Chiba

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

Earlier this year we witnessed one of the worst natural disasters in the past few years. A magnitude-9 earthquake off the coast of Japan caused one of the worst tsunamis in recent years. Toya Chiba, a reporter with Iwate Tokai Shimbun, went to cover the story firsthand. Here are some photos of Chiba taken from a nearby rooftop by local government employee Shoichi Sasaki.

Talk about getting the shot. Chiba still tried to get a photo, which could easily have been his last if not for his quick reflexes and and a dangling rope that saved him. “It was a complete error in judgment.” he was later quoted as saying “I didn’t believe a tsunami of that scale would come.”

This series of photos raises the question though. When is getting the shot more important than life itself?

Dead Beetle

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

For the past few days now, bugs and beetles having been coming to our doorstep to die. And they’re huge! What kind of beetle is this? Oh yeah, handheld macro photography isn’t easy…

Fred G. Redmon Memorial Bridge

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Here’s a little somethin’ from back home.  Fred G. Redmon Memorial Bridge in Selah, WA. I’ve crossed this bridge hundreds of times but never really noticed how big of a structure it is. I never knew so much about this bridge until I took this photo and it was in my backyard for 25 years.

Tequila Tuesday + iPad = this…

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

Tequila Tuesday!

Tonight, after a couple of margaritas, the responsible adults started playing with my sister-in-law’s iPad.  I can’t believe how much fun you can have with such a simple app like Photo Booth.  We were cracking up.  This all started after we had heard that my niece had used her iPad and taken 100s of photos of herself while her mom slept.  Here are just a few from tonight…

1964 Impala

Monday, August 15th, 2011

The other day Kathryn and I were driving around Bellevue trying to find good deal on tile.  Yep, I just said that.  I spotted it about a block away just by the tail lights.  Ok maybe the bright green candy paint had a little to do with it as well.  It was this 1964 Chevrolet Impala.  I wanted one when I was young and into the whole lowrider craze.  This Impala is owned by the guys at Bel-Red Auto Rebuild. They did a beautiful job restoring this classic. Thanks for letting me stop by and take a few shots Dominick!

Señor Moose Cafe – Comida Tipica

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

We recently went out to dinner with some friends that we hadn’t seen in a while. We wanted Mexican food and they recommended the Señor Moose Cafe in Ballard, WA.

“At Señor Moose, we celebrate comida tipica, the cooking found in central plateau Mexico’s fondas and backroom kitchens.”

I like Azteca and Las Margaritas and all but Señor Moose Cafe was a lot more authentic than those. It was delicious, thanks Elena & Dan!

We started off with some fresh and very hot chips with a large selection of salsas to choose from as well as some of the best quacamole I’ve ever had.

There was so much to choose from that I couldn’t make up my mind. I finally decided on the Enchiladas De Machaca.

I’ve never heard of this beer but will definitely be trying it next time. I chose to go with the Sangria (which I forgot to get a photo of as well as my dinner).

I highly recommend and can’t wait to go back to Señor Moose cafe.

Lunchbox Laboratory – Seattle, WA

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

Over the weekend Kathryn and I went desk shopping and after a long day decided to get dinner at Lunchbox Laboratory in South Lake Union.  It was highly recommended by our friend Terry. They’re known to make some of the best burgers in the Seattle area.

The atmosphere is great! The staff was inviting, friendly, and luckily very patient because I couldn’t make up my mind on what to get. There are vintage lunchboxes displayed throughout the dining room, along with lava lamps, toys, and other tchotchkes.

I finally ended up getting the Burger of the gods meal.

This burger is made with a Kobe beef patty, bleu cheese crumbles, balsamic onions, and a creamy gorgonzola sauce dripping out from under the bun. I also got a side order of 3/16th” skinny fries and an ice cold beer. I think it was a Fat Tire but I’m pretty sure I ordered a Mac & Jack’s and they didn’t have it.

Thanks Terry, it’s hard to beat a good ol’ lamb burger but it was delicious and I can’t wait to go back soon.
